To distinguish fabric materials, the most practical method is to combine the following four approaches: first check the label, then use your senses (sight and touch) for a preliminary judgment, and finally verify through a burn test.
Method 1: Sensory Identification (Look and Feel)
This is the most direct first step and requires no tools.
Look: Observe the fabric's luster and texture. For example, pure cotton has a soft luster, while synthetic fibers often appear brighter or even harsh. Silk has an elegant luster, whereas rayon may look "flashier." At the same time, linen fabrics often have distinctive "slubs" on the surface.
Feel: Experience the fabric's softness/hardness, smoothness/roughness, coolness/warmth, and elasticity.
Softness/Hardness: Wool is the softest, while cotton and linen feel relatively stiff.
Coolness/Warmth: Synthetic fibers like polyester feel cool to the touch, whereas wool gives a warm feeling.
Elasticity: Squeeze the fabric in your hand and then release it. Wool and polyester have good elasticity and resist wrinkling, while cotton and linen easily leave creases.
